It was discovered by J.G. Hauge as the third redox cofactor after nicotinamide and flavin in bacteria (although he hypothesised that it was naphthoquinone). Anthony and Zatman also found the unknown redox cofactor in alcohol dehydrogenase. In 1979, Salisbury and colleague as well as Duine and colleagues extracted this prosthetic group from methanol dehydrogenase of methylotrophs and identified its molecular structure. Adachi and colleagues discovered that PQQ was also found in Acetobacter.
Controversy regarding role as vitamin
The scientific journal Nature published the 2003 paper by Kasahara and Kato that essentially stated that PQQ was a new vitamin and in 2005, an article by Anthony and Fenton that stated that the 2003 Kasahara and Kato paper drew incorrect and unsubstantiated conclusions.
PQQ (which stands for Pyrroloquinoline quinone) is a B-vitamin-related nutrient that Nature magazine recommended be classified as a new vitamin back in 2003. At the time, The Washington Post ran a headline proclaiming "1st New Vitamin in 55 Years." Of course my interest was piqued and I set out to learn more.
PQQ is found throughout our food supply. Beans, potatoes, parsley, green tea and fermented foods. Interestingly, it's found in high amounts in human breast milk. In the body we find it concentrated in vital organs with high energy requirements, like the brain and the heart, and within red blood cells.PQQ is active within cellular mitochondria, the energy center of the cell. This nutrient displays antioxidant activity, neuroprotective action, and cognitive benefits. The breadth of PQQ's influence is nothing short of amazing.

Initial evidence of this was demonstrated in a 2009 study published in the medical journal Food Style.1 In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 71 men and women aged 45-65 consumed foods fortified with 20 mg of PQQ (as found in our new maximum potency formula), PQQ plus CoQ10, or placebo, for 12 weeks. Throughout the study, subjects participated in cognitive tests designed to measure memory, recall and cerebral function. The graph shown illustrates the results.
